BIRDS RARITY AND ENDEMISM IN UGANDA

Uganda is one of the few African countries with rare and unique ecosystems that are famous for specialty bird watching! The country is situated in the overlap zone of the major ecological communities of West African Guinea/Congo Basin Rain forests and the East African Savanna floristic structures. With in this zone we find numerous habitats which include rain forests (lowland, semi-altitude and montane), wetlands, water bodies, savanna woodlands and grasslands. The Albertine Montane forests alone contain 23 out of the 26 Albertine Rift Endemic species which include the African Green Broadbill, the Regal Sunbird, the Red-throated Alethe, the Rwenzori Turaco, the Dwarf Honeyguide among others, on the other hand the Lake Victoria and River Nile Basins support the old-world iconic human-sized African bird the “Shoebill” while the North Eastern Savanna woodland are habitats to the only Ugandan endemics the “Fox’s weaver” and the rare Karamoja Apalis. This uniqueness makes Uganda a world popular birding destination and why not prioritize her on your bucket list through wonderuganda.com
