Overview

Uganda boasts of 1235 species of butterflies which is 33% and 6.8% of Afro-Tropical and world’s species totals respectively! The list includes the 31 species endemic to Uganda and 117 species are listed, all of which are found exclusively within the Albertine Rift.

This itinerary primarily emphasizes the systematic approach to viewing and photographing butterflies by use of visual enhancement and photographing equipment led by specialised butterfly guides.

Day 1 Arrive at Entebbe International Airport on the Shore of Lake Victoria

Several major airlines provide service to Entebbe, including United, Delta, Emirates, Ethiopian, KLM, and others. Note, you book your flight depending on your country of origin. Arrival and transfer to Zika Forest, have a butterfly walk around the forest depending on the time of arrival.

Day 2: Zika Forest butteflying.

Whole day at Zika Forest viewing and photographing butterflies from the forest and the adjacent savanna area.  Butterflies to look out for include; Cynandra opis, Liptena congoensis, Leptena xanthostola xantha, Leptena ideoides, Pseudacraea eurytus, Hypolycaena philippus philippus, Cacyreus lingueus, Anthene levis, Green-banded Swallowtail, Mocker Swallowtail, Immaculate Wood White, African Emigrant, Neave’s Judy, Common Leopard, Mountain Pearl Charaxes, Green-veined Charaxes, Ugandan Hairstreak, Pathfinder, Silver Ringlet, Cambridge Vagrant, Charaxes Eurinome, Forest Mother of Pearl, Megalopalpus sp, Kopolates baginei, Charaxes zingha.

Day 3. Transfer to Kibale Forest

After breakfast, we drive to Kibale National Park (7-8 hours), Kibale Forest and its environs are one of the best safari destinations for Butterflies in East Africa because it contains one of the loveliest and most varied remnants of all tropical forests in Uganda . Sitting on an area of 776 sq kms, the forest and its environs contain over 250 species of butterflies. There are three major locations that produce an enormous species of butterflies; i) the trails of Turaco Tree Tops, ii) the Sunbird Hill and iii) Kanyawala Biological Research Station. Each of these locations is explored independent of the other and on different days.

Day 4: Turaco Tree Tops

Early morning breakfast at 7:30am later transfer to Turaco Trails for Butterflies full day to check out for Eupheadra ugandae (endemic), , Euphaedra medon, Common Euptera ,Glassy Winged Acraea, Telipna shefieldii, Blood Red Glider, Elymniopsis bammako, Orange Forester, Falcuna iturina stempffe, Ornipholidotos ugandae, Eagris tigris,  Have a lunch at Turaco Tree Tops and then head back to the forest in the afternoon.

Day 5: Kanyawala Biological Station

After breakfast transfer to Kanyawala for full day butterflying – Your ultimate Butterfly Kingdom for other special butterflies which include, Acraea althoffi, Zaddachi’s Mimic Forester, Common Palm Forester Acraea lycoa hewitsonia Intermediate, Epitolina melissa, Kallimoides rumia, Cymothoe lurida, packed lunch is inevitable since its far from the accommodation units and return to the lodge in the evening.

Day 6: Sunbird Hill near Kibale Forest Park

Sunbird hill is located at the edge Kibale Forest National Park and it offers good trails for butterflies and a good spot for several butterfly species that would have been missed from other locations in Kibale Forest.

Day 7: Transfer to Kalinzu Forest.

Drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park for yet other spectacular savanna butterflies along the road! not forgetting to see the biggest land mammal on earth! about 7-6hrs depending how many stopovers we make along the way for butterfly viewing and photography.

Day: 8,9,10: Kalinzu Forest

We spend three days in the Kalinzu Forest; i) on the main trail, ii) on 300m trail (loop in the forest), then the main trail and iii) Forest Trail.

Kalinzu is known to have endemics of Acraea family and some Papilio and Euphaedra species that only occur in Kibale National Park we keep our open to the forest for some of these beautiful butterflies. Papilio hesperus, Giant Emperor Swallowtail, Narrow Blue-banded Swallowtail, Noble Swallowtail, Blue Monarch, Small-striped Swordtail. Angolan White Lady, Long-tailed Admiral, Common Grass Yellow, BicyCharaxes paphianus, Ornate Green Charaxes, Scarce Forest Emperor, Small Falme-bordered Charaxes, Peral Charaxes, Giant Charaxes, Blue Mother of Pearl, Lilac Beauty, , Migratory Glider, Clarks Acraea, Euphaedra imitans, Common Blue-banded Forest, Preuss’s Forester, Euphaedra edwardsii, Neave’s banded Judy, common Fairy Hairstreak, large Fairy Hairstreak, Falcuna orientalis, Kallimoides rumia, African Map. Day 11: Transfer to Nkima Forest Lodge about 8-7hrs drive

Butterflies of Nkima Forest include Small Elphin (Sarangea phidyle), Leopard fritillary Wanderer (Phalanta phalanta), Savanah Elf (Eretis vaga), Savanah Pathfinder (Pardaleodes imperta), Skippers and flats, Westwoods (Acraea pseudegina), Ribbes (Acraea leucographa), Blue Pansies, Common Orange (Telchiria serena), Little and Soldier Commodores, Castors, African Jokers, Diadems….

Day 12: Mpanga Forest,

Uganda is known to have about 14 species of Telipna and the special one is known to be Mpanga’s special butterfly Telipna shifieldii and other species to look out for Charaxes Eupale latimargo, Acraea Lycoa, Acraea peneleos, Ariadne enotrea, Aterica galene, Bebearia absolon, Bebearia absolon entebbiae, Bebearia carshena, Bematistes macarista….
