Uganda is a habitat to 345 species of mammals which is 39% and 7.8% of Africa’s and world’s totals respectively! The list includes the endangered and endemic Gorillas (gorilla berengei berengei) a specie shared among Uganda, DR Congo and Rwanda, the range-restricted African chimpanzees, the African Big five and many exciting primates among others
This itinerary emphasizes the viewing of mammals from their ecosystems accompanied by ecological interpretation from our guides but at the same time pointing out at other wildlife like birds and plants…… which are also members of the complete ecosystems of Uganda.
Uganda is the “Primate Capital of the Universe” with close to 54 % of the global and critically endangered primates and man’s closest relatives – the Gorillas and Chimpanzees in Bwindi and Kibale forests respectively. The duo has been fully habituated over years and now full tourism products in Uganda. Other primates that have been fully habituated over time and available for tracking include the Grey-cheeked Mangabeys (Ugandan Mangabey) in Mabira Forest Reserve in Central Uganda and the Golden Monkey in Mgahinga National park in South-western Uganda. Uganda boasts of 1083 species of birds which is 50% and 10% of Africa’s and world’s totals respectively! The list includes the 23 Albertine Rift endemics out of the 26 species recorded in the region, the endemic weaver (Fox’s weaver) and the old-world human-sized African bird the “Shoebill”
This itinerary primarily emphasizes the systematic approach to watching birds by use of visual enhancement equipment led by specialised bird guides but at the same time encourages the viewing of other wildlife with whom birds share the ecosystems!
